Green waste fly-tipping is not a victimless crime - it blights the countryside, harms wildlife and creates unnecessary costs

The campaign, launched by the Dorset Partnership Against Rural Crime (DPARC), will remind residents and contractors to dispose of garden waste responsibly and that they have a legal responsibility to do so. Fly-tipping of garden waste can cause harm to grazing livestock and risks introducing non-native species to wildlife habitats including areas of scientific importance. It can also block verges, roads and gateways, increase the risk of fire and creates costs for landowners and taxpayers. Promoting legal disposal options, including council garden waste services, household recycling centres and licensed waste carriers, forms part of the campaign.

The Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) for Dorset, David Sidwick, whose office is in partnership with DPARC, is involved in the campaign and is encouraging anyone witnessing or spotting fly-tipping of any kind to report it. The PCC funds a dedicated fly-tipping enforcement officer within Dorset Council which has already delivered results and saw 80 Fixed Penalty Notices (FPNs) issued for waste-related offences in 2025—almost double the number issued in 2024.
